America began as colonies of England, France, Spain, and the Netherlands. The story of America began with the colonization of the East Coast. Each colony had its own unique characteristics.
People who settled in the New England Colonies wanted to keep their families together and practice their own religion. They were used to doing many things themselves and not depending on other people.
The people who founded the Middle Colonies were looking to practice their own religion and to make money. Many of them worked hard in ironworks and shipyards.
.The founders of the Southern Colonies came to America to make money. They kept their families together on the plantations.
In colonial America, kids could have gone to public or private schools, just like today, but what you learned and how you learned it have changed over the years. Schools were small, comparing to the large ones many kids go to today. Now we have separate schools for different grades: Elementary - K-5, Middle - 6-8, and High - 9-12. In the New England and Middle colonies, parents believed that their children should learn about religion. Larger villages had grammar schools where boys were taught Latin, math and other subjects needed to get into college. In Southern colonies kids were taught at home by their parents or private tutors. Girls weren't allowed to go to grammar school or to college. Kids in colonial America were taught a trade that their fathers did, so they could continue the family business when their fathers retired. Often, kids would go to school and learn a trade.
In comparison to the modern times with much more variety, in the colonial times people wore plain clothing. Most of them made their own clothes so clothes had to be simple, warm, and sturdy. The men wore loose linen shirts. Their pants reached only to the knee. Their socks were long and woolen. They wore a sleeveless jacket. They wore plain leather shoes, wide brimmed hats, and coats or capes for protection from cold or rain. Shirts were white. The rest of their clothes were typically brown or black. Women wore loose dresses under a long gown made of wool or linen. Sometimes the sleeves were removable and tied on. Over the dress they wore a plain apron. All their clothes were held in place by tying them. Their hair was pulled up and tucked under a coif (a fabric hat or top piece). They wore long woolen socks. Their shoes were made of sturdy leather. They also wore capes or coats to protect them from the cold. Until they were age seven, both boys and girls wore simple gown or shifts. Over the age of seven, they wore clothes designed like their parents.
Today getting food is much easier than in colonial times. All we have to do is go to the grocery store to buy our food. In colonial America people had to hunt or grow their own food. We also don’t have to cook every night, we can go to a restaurant or a dine in. Today we have a larger variety of food to pick from.
