The Southern ColoniesThe geography and climate impacted the trade and economic activities of Southern Colonies. The Southern Colonies concentrated on agriculture and had the plantations growing and exporting tobacco, cotton, corn, vegetables, grain, fruit and livestock. The Southern Colonies had the largest slave population who worked on the Slave Plantations. Some of the Southern plantations were very big and consisted of the main house, slave quarters, a dairy, blacksmith's shop, laundry, smokehouse and barns. They produced or made just about everything they needed on the plantation. They traded crops for items that could not be produced on the plantations including farm tools, shoes, lace, and dishes.
The south did not have a need for big cities, only for port towns (a place with a deep water dock). Charleston, South Carolina was the major port. The Southern Colonies consisted of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The landforms were savannas in the Southern Colonies. |
